Bow River

I was up the Bow River from the town of Banff, looking to get pictures of Massive Range during sunrise. The light reached the peaks but due to lack of clouds, the picture was rather plain. But when I turned around I saw a better picture, I set up the camera again and got the picture. Massive Range will have to wait a another morning.

Moon over Sawback Range

About a billion years ago the moon was only about 200,000 Kilometers away from earth, instead of the now 384,000 Kilometers. It would have taken the moon 20 days to orbit the earth instead of over 27 days today. The tide would have been much stronger as well and during the full moon phase, you would not have needed sunglasses but the light reflected to the earth would have been immense. The moon's relationship with the earth is in constant change as the moon continues drifting away.

Moon and Howse Peak

Most of us know when the sun will be rising and setting, but very few of us are aware what the moon is up to, other then when it is a full moon.  Before I go out I like to know where the moon is in the sky, keeping  my options open for photo opportunities with it. I had my eyes on the moon as its was heading for the back of Waputik Range. After taking number of shots, this was the one I liked the most, the moon setting behind Howse Peak.

Sawback Range

I just had finished taking pictures of Castle Mountian, when I looked toward the east. The clouds were reaching toward the sky, being lit up by the fading light. As well right there in the middle was the moon. It was the combination of the clouds and the moon that made the picture for me.

Castle Mountain

Was taking pictures of Castle Mountain with the evening light on it. At that time the clouds were too far away and I was not liking the pictures I was getting. Once the light was off the clouds, the clouds in the distance lit up. Then it was a hurry to find a spot without falling off the ice into the cold water to take the picture I was hoping for.

Mount Rundle

I was bit under the weather, but decided to bundle up and head outside anyway. With me taking too long to decide if I should go, as soon I stepped outside I could see the warm colours in the clouds. Kept my fingers crossed, hoping to make it to the Vermilion Lakes before it was too late. With the heavy winds, there was only one place where I was going to find still water. It was a small area, but that was all I needed. When I saw all the clouds on fire, I forgot about the aching joints and started clicking the camera. It was a morning to remember.

Another year is coming to an end. Life always seems to take me away from what I  enjoy most, which is nature photography. But I kept pushing back, getting outside to explore and bring back pictures. I never got all the pictures I wanted, just another reason whey I need to get out there in the New Year.

Mount Rundle

This picture was taken the same night as the previous one, I just moved about 40 meters to the right. The clouds had almost covered all of the Northern Lights, but the water was still and Mount Rundle and Tunnel Mtn were visible. I took a ten second exposure.

More experimenting with star trails pictures. Northern Lights were out, but I could only include them in part of the frame. I thought with the Northern Lights I would include star trails, so I took several pictures over a 15 minute period. When I started there were less clouds, but they soon moved in. In the end I lost some of the star trails and the northern lights. But I was still happy with the experiment.

Was out enjoying the cool night while practicing taking pictures of star trails. Everything else about photography is the same, it's about trying to decide how the start trails can enhance the overall picture. It will be fun to see what I can come up with, there is no limit to photography and imagination. Looking forward to more trials and errors.

Morant's Curve

Spent way to much of November away from home, so its was great to be back exploring Banff National Park. In the last few days spent several hours moving all that snow that came down, so it was good to take pictures of it as well. This one was taken in the Lake Louise area, all the trees and mountains looked beautiful with the snow.

My favourite season winter is here, open water is disappearing and blanket of snow is covering the ground. My fingers and toes get cold like everyone else's. I just put on my warm layers and make the most of it. I can't control when the winter comes and goes, just how much fun I can have while its here.

Mount Rundle

With shorter days it time to get out to take night pictures after day light has passed. Few days back on a cool night  I made my way to the Vermilion Lakes to see what the sky loked like. Just enough clouds in the sky to add to the picture and the light from the Banff lit up Mount Rundle and some of the clouds.

Castle Mountain

With the light coming from a more southernly direction, the evening light really lights up Castle Mountain. I'll be spending more time taking pictures late in the day and hopefully more in the morning as well of castle.

Mount Chephren

There is no better way to enjoy the mountains then to wander through valleys. There are so many surprises waiting around each turn, from different views of the surroundings to the possible chance of coming across creatures, from an insect to a large mammal. I'm not picky, I always find something to enjoy and to take pictures of. Few weeks back on a cold morning I walked along the river until I was tired and came back with few pictures to remind me of that adventure.

The clouds were moving pretty fast through the sky, I was not sure if they wuld be in right spot when the sun would light them up. Crossed my fingers, located a spot and waited. I did not have to wait long before finding out it was going to work out, got an another beautiful picture from Vermilion Lakes.
