Elephant's Head Lousewort

Always fun to take pictures of flowers, a chance to play with colours. I was walking along Bow Lake when I came across Elephant's Head Lousewort flower. It stood out as it was, but I thought I could make it pop by separating it from the back ground.  Camera in hand, I walked back and forth until I got what I wanted.

Red-naped Sapsucker

Last year in July I was at the same meadow among the same aspen trees. I was taking pictures of the flowers when I heard sounds  from one of the tree. I was able to locate the aspen tree that had number of bird created holes, and the sounds I assumed was of chicks, coming from the top hole. I was not able to identify what bird chicks were in the nest, the mosquitoes had made it difficult for me to stick around to see the parents return with food.

This year at the same place, hearing the same sound coming from the same nest, made me more determined to wait. The mosquitoes were not going to drive me off. I was quickly rewarded, the nest belonged to a pair of Red-naped Sapsuckers. A medium sized woodpecker, first time I had come across them and was happy get few good pictures. Spent 30 to 40 minutes watching them bring back food for their chicks. Another one of my nature's mystery solved.

Grizzly Bear

The grizzly cub was having a lovely dinner in the shade, with its mother and sibling nearby doing the same. End to the day was not far off, just watched them from a distance for a while. The cub stood up on its hind legs when loud noise was head from nearby. Seconds later it was back eating after realizing no harm was coming its way.

Osprey

It was on the nest looking after its three chicks, when it diecided to go for a fly. Made few large circles around the nest, slowed down its flight to have a look in the water before continuing on. Soon came back to the nest with a small branch.

Glacier Lilies

The glacier lilies were out in abundance, these perennial wildflowers are small but beautiful to look at and fun to take pictures of. Located them near a subalpine mountain meadows, I just needed to decide which one to take pictures of. I was looking for one or two that stood out from their surroundings. Once I located a pair, got low to the ground, on all four and took the pictures. Happy with the pictures I stood up, not knowing I had startled nearby hikers. They thought I was a bear, who was eating one of its favorite food, the glacier lilies. Once recognizing me, they laughed and kept walking.

Moon Over Mount Victoria

Few weeks back I was standing front of Lake Louise, watching the first morning light hit Mount Victoria. As the mountains basked in the morning light, moon came out of hiding, it was about to set behind Mount Victoria. I zoomed in and started taking close-up pictures of the moon and the peaks. It's hard to take bad pictures at Lake Louise.

Harlequin Duck

Was hanging out along the river when she flew into the area. The female Harlequin Duck landed about 15 meters from me, I slowly moved myself closer to her to get a picture. She started to groom herself before going under the water for food. She was not having much luck, as quickly as arrived, she left the area.

Wood Lily

The wood lilies are out, a beautiful red flower. Had to pay a price getting the pictures, in a form of mosquitoes. Have to spray myself before I get more pictures, I have seen more lilies then normal. Perhaps all the rain we have received is playing a role.

Tangle Falls

Normally I like to take pictures of water falls in the morning or late in the day. But I decided to try my luck with overcast sky, rain was making its way to the location. I was trying to get pictures of Tangle Falls in Jasper National Park. There was no one standing front of the fall to have their picture taken by friends or family members. That was not going to last long, I had mere minutes to get the picture I wanted. I moved to the location that would give the best picture and went about taking various long exposures , wanted that nice smooth look of the water. I ended up getting couple of minutes to take my pictures before other visitors arriving after me had spread them self next to the fall to have their picture taken.

Black Bear Cub

The cub's mom was eating the willow shrub flowers. For the cub the flowers were too high for its reach, so it decided to climb the branches. As it was getting closer to the flowers, the branches under the weight started to bend over. Just as it was about to reach the flowers with its mouth, it slipped off and gently landed on the ground. The flowers again out of its reach. Just then its mom started to walk away, the cub having to follow, did not get a second chance at the flowers.

Black Bear

The bear had a determined walk, only stopping to take the occasional bite or two of food. Spent few minutes watching it, will never get tired of them. Remarkable how they have adapted to their environment, just hope we give them the space they need to adapt to us.

Moose

I was running, jumping and ducking to get into a position to take pictures of a moose crossing the river, but I was too late. The male had crossed and had moved into the forest on the other side, as it ate I grabbed few pictures. While I watched and took its pictures, something was moving on my side of the river, not too far away. It was another but smaller bull, thinking it was going to also cross the river, I positioned myself for the crossing. Few minutes later the younger bull started to cross, the long legs came in handy to reach the other side.

Mountain Blue-Eyed Grass

The wild flowers are out and more to come. When possible, I like to spend some time in the afternoon taking pictures of the wild flowers. It's fun working with the flower as the subject and trying to find a pleasing background. Spent some time under the sun, on my knees taking pictures of the Mountain Blue-Eyed Grass flower.

Sundance Range

With water level higher then normal at the Vermilion Lakes, more opportunities are provided for sunset pictures. The water was still, the green colours were out and the clouds were in the right place. Just for added bonus, the moon was in the sky. Was happy to get this picture.

Mountain Goats

I was making my way home through Kootenay National Park, passing by Mount Wardle, when I saw several mountain goats at the animal lick. It's a place where the goats can find important mineral nutrients. The natural licks , provide various minerals for bone, muscle and other growth in animals. They were about 15 meters above the road, quickly grabbed several pictures before continuing my way home.

Takakkaw Falls

Takakkaw Falls in Yoho National Park was at its best. Second highest waterfall in Canada, at 254 meters. With the melt water and rain making its way to the Yoho Valley at the bottom, it fitted its Cree name "Takakkaw", meaning "it is magnificent".

White-crowned Sparrow

It was early in the morning, all quite, except for the singing of a White-crowned Sparrow. Took few seconds to locate it and then few more to get in the position to take its pictures. The setting was great, perched and surrounded by the beautiful green colour of spruce tree needles. Grabed the pictures and then walked away listening to the bird's song.
