Black-capped Chickadee

I was in middle of the forest, looking up and trying to take pictures of the Black-capped Chickadees. The trick was trying to get the birds in focus and trying to get enough details with light coming from above the birds. It took few minutes following the birds to get some good pictures, this one was my favourite.

Coyote

Coyote is one of the mammals I often see and have taken many pictures of. When I saw this one, I was just as curious about it as the time I saw the first one. For me its simple, the more I learn about what I'm taking pictures of, the better the pictures will be. Realizing it knows I'm near and it's not concerned about me. I can relax and not be in hurry to take its picture. It took its time to searching the area and I waited and only
took pictures when the conditions were right for a good image.

Elk

It was early in the morning, making my way home after taking pictures of the sunrise. While passing by a open field I noticed several male elk grazing on a field while two were having a bit of a joust. Had to make a quick stop to grab few pictures of them practicing while others looked on.

Northern Harrier Hawk

Just few weeks back I was standing next to the river looking at waterfowls, when I looked to my right. There just couple of meters above the water was a juvenile Northern Harrier flying toward me. I thought, here's my chance to finally get a good picture of this bird. But it saw me before I could focus my camera on it and right away it changed its directions away from me. But soon I got a second chance, it came back and went to check out what the magpies were up to near me. Couple of the them chased it toward me, helping me get this picture of the beautiful bird.

Grey Wolf

It was few weeks back when I saw a pack of grey wolves. They were full of energy, making their way trough their territory. This is a picture of the alpha female, waiting for her pack to move into the forest. Always a treat to see the wolves.

Song Sparrow

I'm sure they are all gone south from the area for the winter by now. But few weeks ago spotted this Song Sparrow on a sunny day among the previous day old snowfall. Its call got my attention and quickly got this picture before it flew away.

Elk

On a cold morning, this male elk was eating what it could find to get through another day. It has many months to go before it finds the next good meal. Until then the goal is simple, to survive the winter.

Castle Mountain

Castle Mountain is one of the more popular mountain in Banff National Park. Often spotted going through the valley on the main highway or Bow Valley Parkway. The ice formed a week back as a result of the cold temperatures. The mountain and the Bow River in the foreground always make for a good picture.

Two Jack Lake

I don't let winter slow me down when it comes to photography. The days get shorter, opportunities get less, in particular with wildlife, but everyday still has a sunset and a sunrise. It was a cold morning and I was hanging around Two Jack Lake for a photo opportunity. Just when I though the sunlight was not going to make its way through. Clouds parted enough to spread the warm light, providing a nice contrast to the cold morning.

Coyote

Three coyotes were exploring and walking on a trail. One of them decided to get off the trail and start to cross the field next to the trail. Not realizing the other two were not following, they were scared off by two hikers coming to the scene. Once this coyote reached the other side of the field, it stopped and looked back for the other two, waited few seconds before moving on.

Moose

The day was coming to an end and not much light was left when the two year and half old Moose were spotted near the forest. They were just standing there with the occasional nibble on the vegetation. As it got darker they moved into the forest leaving the few of us watching them with memories and pictures.

Trumpeter Swans

The two Trumpeter Swans were about to run out of open water on the river. I was on the far side watching and taking pictures, wondering what would they do next. They decided to back track for about 20 to 30 meters to get a running start to take to air. I positioned myself in the open and started to take pictures as soon as they started to flap their wings. Getting a unique view and pictures of them flying below my eye level.

Trumpeter Swans

Two adult Trumpeter Swans with their one and only young on the Bow River. This cygnet will stay with its parents during winter and migrate north with them. Then it will be driven away, it will then hang out togeather in a sibling groups until about two years of age. When it starts to seek a mate.

Trumpeter Swans

Just about two weeks ago, snow was on the ground and part of the river was frozen. I spotted this pair of Trumpeter Swans as I was walked along the river. They stayed on the far side, which improved my chances for good pictures, because the sun was behind me they were in the light and I was in the shade.
