Moose

It was a surprise coming across these two moose, a mother and her calf, they have a look as if they were surprised by me in turn, as if they were up to no good. Earlier that day a truck had dropped a bit of dirt while going by on this small side road. For moose as for other members of the deer family, winters are a big challenge for survival. There is very little to eat, and what there is provides very little energy. They are hungry, waiting for spring when food will be available that will help them gain the weight they lost over the winter. So when they come across some dirt that may have minerals their body needs, its worth getting down on their knees for it.

This bull moose was making its way through the meadow full of willow shrubs. It was toward the end of the day, perhaps he was done with eating and resting in the open, it was time to head into the woods for the night.

After being out there for couple of hours, I started to head back when the snow started to fall. As I came around a turn, there front of me separated by 10 meters of shrubs and small trees were two moose, a mother and her calf. The calf was surprised and moved back, I moved back as well and watched to see the mother's reaction. She looked at me for few seconds and then went back to eating. I moved further back and watched her and the nervous calf who had her ears pointed at me and looked at her mother to decide what to do.  The calf was only about half a year old and was still learning a lot from her mother. Noticing her mother felt safe, the cafe made her way back to the safety of her mom. I standing there in the snow storm,  took few pictures before leaving the two twig eaters.

I was taking picture of a moose calf with its mother nearby. It was end of the day when I came across both of them, at first the calf moved away while the mother stayed put. Soon the calf started to walk towards it mother, as I was taking its pictures, the mother popped her head front of my camera.I guess she wanted some attention as well.

Winter is here in force, it was a clear morning but by the time I came across this female moose, snow was falling. I played it safe, keeping my distance while trying to get a picture of her through the shrubs and the falling snow. After she had a look at me, she went on eating.

This young moose stopped eating to look over in my direction, all members of the deer family are enjoying the green vegetation provided by the warmer weather. This is the time when they start gaining weight, the energy they will need during the next winter. With the calving season here, for the female even more important the food they need is here.

This picture was taken about a month ago, a moose standing in a meadow, The bull took a break from eating and seemed to be staring out in a distance. He would have soon lost his antlers and soon after the process starts of him growing a new set. By the time the rut rolls in the fall, they will be fully grown.

There are few animals on most visitors  list to see when visiting the national parks in the mountains, bears, wolves are always on the top, but moose are not far behind. The amount of times I'm out there I do get to see my share, since there are not as many as elk and deer, I'm always happy to see a moose. In this case a mother and a calf were trying to cross the road, being middle of the a sunny day there was some traffic on the road. So few  of us decided to stop the traffic so the two could cross safely. No one minded stopping, not everyday a visitor to the park gets to see a moose from the comfort of their vehicle, let along two. Some took pictures while others enjoyed the beautiful view like the two boys in the vehicle.

This picture was taken few weeks back after a small snow storm went through the valley. Since then we have been getting relatively warm weather and most moose have lost their antlers. Here the adult male looks as if he is in a cotton field, standing out and even more so when the sun reached the valley's bottom.

Moose calf born last spring, staying close to its very protective mother. This young male will stay with its mother for about a year before it has to move on, the mother will give birth and start the process of raising a calf again.

A bull moose taking a break from his breakfast, to look toward to me. Just like the way he is looking at me, perhaps I'm humanizing him. Who I'm kidding, I have a habit of doing that.

This young moose was busy enjoying tops of willow shrubs on a cold frosty morning. The setting was ideal, fresh snow had covered everything around the moose, proving a nice contrast.

One of the best thing a photographer needs to do to get pictures, after learning how to use their equipment and learning about the subjects and in my case many subjects, is to get outside. There is no easy solution when it comes to shooting wildlife then that. In the mountains there is no one place where all the wildlife is waiting for to be seen. It is a simple formula, the more you get out the more you will see. Moose is an nice example, there is no one place in the park where one can see them on a daily basis, but the amount of times I get out, I know I will see one or more every few weeks.

The moose was about 100 meters away, walking through the calm water in the evening. The calm water helped reflect the beautiful colours of the trees and the willow shrubs. Making for an interesting picture.

Have you ever cupped your hands and placed them behind the ears to improve your hearing. The moose does just that, but by using their palm shaped antlers. Their ears are already 60 times larger then ours, by using their natural hearing aids, sound reception can improve by additional 20 percent. All the better to hear a chocolate eating photographer behind a tree.

It was late afternoon and light snow was falling. This male who had just few days before dropped its antlers was eating away with another bull, who was outside the frame. With a cold morning and the heavy snow on the road kept me near home, so it was good to end the day taking pictures of two moose.

Moose don't have much problem getting through deep snow. with their long legs they move through the snow to get at a common food in the winter. The winter limits what they can eat, so top of willow shurbs is a regular part of their diet. This one was in a meadow with one other bull, both resting and eating all day long.

Moose and Calf

Was taking sunrise pictures on a cold morning, with frost all around me and low mist over the lake. I was walking around the lake to find a better location to take pictures from, when a moose's head popped out of the bushes front of me and looked straight at me. I quickly started to back track and went to the other side of the small lake and sat down. Slowly the adult female came out in the open, ate and then sat down, soon joined by its calf, who came over and rubbed noses with its mom before sitting down.

Two Moose

I had taken my sunrise pictures, it was time to look around. Half an hour later from a distance,  I saw two moose eating on the side of a lake. Water separated us, which also controlled how close I was going to get to them. With lit up mountains behind them, I started working on a picture which would showcase part of their habitat. It was a challenge with the bright background and they close to the colour of my favourite food standing in the shadows. But in the end, I came away happy.

Moose and Two Calves

Few weeks back I was busy taking pictures of a sunrise or should I say the first light hitting the peaks front of me. When I looked to my left, about 100 meters away I saw a female moose and what looked like a calf near her. After I took the landscape pictures, I moved closed to the moose. There was the female, but two not one calves, a first for me. I kept my distance and was able to get few good pictures through the fog.
