Red Paintbrush

One of the more abundance flowers found in the mountains, is the paintbrush, very hard not to see one during an outing. And for me very hard to pass them without taking their pictures. In this case it was in the morning, the sun was shining on everything behind the flower, so I got low on the ground to get the picture with a bright and a clear background.

Calypso Orchid

I took this picture few weeks ago while walking through the forest serching for birds. They were small pathes scatterd on the forest ground, whenever I came across one I would take few pictures. From that morning walk, I got few okay pictures of birds but much better pictures of this beautiful floewer.

Sunflower

While taking picture of wild sunflowers the bees were keeing busy among them. Soon I was kept busy on a warm afternoon trying to take their pictures going from one flower to another. This is one picture I took that day.

Wood Lily

It was a rainy afternoon when I spotted a rare yellow wood lily among the common red ones. I waited in the car for the rain level to decrease, before getting out and taking few pictures. The rain did not slow down, so I decided to quickly pop out and take few pictures. Two days later I was back there on a hot sunny day, but the yellow wood lily was gone. Sadly if the past is an indicator, more then likely it removed by someone who wanted it for their garden. But hope was not lost, walking through hundreds of the common red wood lilies, I found a another yellow.

Brown-eyed Susan

I always enjoy taking pictures of flowers, I know they will stay in one area and I can move around them to get the picture I want. As well for this bown-eyed susan, I was on my knees to get the soft green backround and to get the colour from the other flowers in the area.

Fireweed

Every summer I have to take at least few picture of this beautiful flower, fireweed. In many places the flowers are on the their last few days, so I made my way into Kootenay NP and locate these flowers on the valley floor. The wind was an issue, but between gusts I got few keepers.

Brown-eyed Susan

There never seems to be enough time to take all the pictures of the flowers I want each summer. But few weeks ago the time was on my side as I was not far from the road taking pictures of the brown-eyed susan flowers. It was great way to spend small amount of time on a sunny afternoon.

Wood Lilies

Light rain was falling on hundreds of wood lilies before me and just enough light to get out among them to take pictures. It's a beautiful flower, even more with rain helping to saturate their colours. Just kept looking for the right combination of flower or flowers with the  right background, out of all the pictures I took that morning  this one was my favourite.

Colorado Columbine

At this time of the season its worth watching where I'm stepping. As I was taking pictures of Bow Fall, I noticied this beautiful columbine near my feets. A quick change of lens and the picture was mine.

Fireweed

Slowly the summer colours are disappearing as cool temperatures move in. Days are getting shorter and the mornings are getting colder. There still are few fireweed flowers to be found, the one in the picture was captured few weeks back.

Mountain Blue-Eyed Grass

The wild flowers are out and more to come. When possible, I like to spend some time in the afternoon taking pictures of the wild flowers. It's fun working with the flower as the subject and trying to find a pleasing background. Spent some time under the sun, on my knees taking pictures of the Mountain Blue-Eyed Grass flower.

Prairie Crocuses

For few weeks the crocuses have been blooming and showing their beautiful colours. Other flowers are on their way, but for me its was time to get out last week and get down and dirty to grab several pictures of this flower. I wanted to add the green colour of the kinnikinnick plant that was surrounding some of the crocus flowers. Storm was moving in, I hurried to grab as many pictures as I could before the wind was too great and the rain started to fall. Once finished I made my way to the car but not before chatting with some of the locals who were out to see the same flower.

Brown eyed Susan

Knowing what your photography equipment is capable of, one can focus on creating an interesting image. Having fun experimenting and not be concerned with what the camera or the lens are doing. When taking pictures of flowers, I often have lot of time to walk around the subject to get the picture I want. I set the setting to have a very narrow focus area, and if I put certain amount of space between the subject and the background. I will get a very pleasing soft background. Then for the fun part, finding the subject and the right background to complement it.
