Darners Dragonfly

Middle of the day, sun is high and I'm surrounded by flowers and trying to take pictures of insects flying and resting. For this dragonfly picture, I would watch it protect its territory and try to focus on it when it hovered in the air for a second or two. The hard part alwys is trying to focus on them, but with some effort I got my pictures.

Milbert's Tortoiseshell

It was just few days ago when I was surrounded by beautiful colour of asters. The various insect were busy among the flowers, but I was looking at the few Milbert's Tortoiseshell butterflies. Waiting for them to get close enough to get a picture. To help me get a good picture, I made sure the light was coming from behind me to get brighter colours. It only took minutes to get the picture I was waiting for.

Darners Dragonfly

One way to practice becoming fast at using the camera and lens to locate and take pictures of fast moving birds, is to practice taking pictures of dragonflies. I was standing by the water, watching when and where they would stay in one place in the air. Then quickly focusing on them and trying to get few sharp images.

Dragonfly and Damselflies

Was hoping to come across birds, but as the afternoon moved on I came to realisation I had to pick another subject. Dragonflies and damselflies were all around me, I had my new subject. It was hard taking pictures of them flying, but when they would stop I would snap some pictures. Before I knew it, I was starting to get few good pictures. Once again nature provides.

Butterfly and Dragonflies

There is never an end to finding subject to take pictures of in the mountains. Last few weeks I been taking pictures of insects. For a while it was the bees around the flowers. The last few days I have been coming across butterflies, waiting for them to land on flowers. Slowly moving close to take pictures. Today I was getting pictures of dragonflies, lot of patience was required. Waiting for them to perch or slow down to take their pictures.

Whiteface Dragonfly

I was walking around a picnic area near a railway track, when I came across this Whiteface Dragonfly. It seems to be end of its life as it was not doing much flying, also seems to be a problem with one of its wings. I took the attached picture as the dragonfly was resting on the spike, the colours on the metal highlighted the beautiful colours of the fly. Hope they had lot of mosquitoes to eat this summer, as the mosquitoes were very busy taking my blood this year.
