Gray Wolf

The alpha female gray wolf had walked up the slope and found a place to rest, soon after the alpha male followed with their pups. They went higher up then the female, pups stopped but the male kept going further. After few minutes the male came back near the pups and started howling, joined by the female where she was resting. Then the excited pups joined in, the excitement in the pups increased when the saw their mother walking up to them. They could not wait for her to reach them, all three pups in excitement started running toward their mother. Almost being knocked over as she was greeted by her pups

Gray Wolf

This is a close-up of a wild alpha female gray wolf, she and her best friend the alpha male share the responsibilities of looking after their pack and the place they call home. They like to rest during the day and hunt when daylight is not providing a advantage to their prey. Are always on the move, to mark their territory but also looking for food. If they are able to bring down a adult elk or a moose, they will hang until the kill is consumed over few days. There is one other time the pack or part of a pack stays in one area,  it's when the alpha female is giving birth. She will control the den site and be very protective of the pups, even from the members of her own pack. So it's no wonder the pups form a very special bond with their mother, a bond that continues beyond the weeks spent in and around the den.

Gray Wolf

A pup navigates its way through snow, fallen trees and other type of vegatation. For us it would be energy consuming endeavour, but for this pup its just a another day in the park.

Alpha male made his way onto the side of the road, it stopped and lifted its head parallel to the surface its was standing on. The beautiful sound started to come out of its mouth, right away its howl was joined by that belonging to yearling and that of a pup, who were standing just inside the forest. For few minutes, rest of the world disappeared.

Grizzly bears benefit from having wolves in the same ecosystem. Sometimes grizzlies can take over what the wolves have killed or at least get some leftovers.  But grizzlies can also have more berries in their diet if wolves are around. The wolves keep prey's population in check, which in turn provide more vegetation and habitat for other wildlife. With natural control of prey population, more berry producing shrubs grow, which the grizzlies can consume. So lot is riding on this pup reaching adulthood.

I got to watch this wolf trying to hunt. It was going after a small heard of bighorn sheep, trying to isolate the weak one. It gave a good chase, but the luck was on the sheep side that day. Maybe the wolf tried again toward end of the day, when low light would give it a better chance.

Gray Wolves

Wolves are very social animals, living in a pack. Most often they are related to each other by blood, led by an alpha male and female. After the alpha mates, you have the lower groups, consisting of non-breeding adults, immature wolves and perhaps outcasts, each with their own ranking. In this picture two pups are being looked after and being led by their two year old sister. Until the pups are old enough to travel with the pack, it always help the pack to have other adults helping with the raising of the young wolves.

Middle of the day I decided to get out and explore. Just as I was coming out of the forest to the edge of the river, I spotted a wolf on the other side. It looked at me for few seconds but then it moved away. Then I heard the calling of Bald Eagles, I got close enough to take their pictures. As I moved into the spot the snow started to fall, took cover under a tree for few hours, taking pictures of the eagles when the snow was light. When it cleared I was rewarded further, the wolf was back, I stayed put, taking its pictures before it left me again.

One of my favourite picture, a wolf resting in a snow storm. Its all in the face, even more important, its all in the eyes. The head down, looking into the distance. A peaceful moment.

Gray Wolf Family

Its that time again, rules or in this case a rule for a family portrait. Sometimes its good to let the individuals in the family decide how they want look in the picture. It a great way to see their individuality and can make for an interesting picture.

This shy pup was bit hesitant to cross the road, a behaviour which will go long way in providing a long life. I stopped and waited for it to come back on the road, it waited on one side while looking both sides. After more wait it quickly crossed the road and ran into the forest, where it's father was.
