Wolves

It's always easier to get an interesting pictures when the subject is close and dominates the frame. The challenge increases when the landscape dominates the picture and the subject is small part of it, as in this case with the wolf pack. I felt there was a picture waiting to be taken, I just had to find it. I was watching rest of the pack make their way to the alpha female. The wolves did all the work for me, they were spread out, following each others tracks, my eyes lead from one wolf to another, right to the female. I just had wait until they were all visible among the fallen and standing dead trees, before taking the picture.

Wolves

It was a cold morning when I came across these two young wolves. Two siblings living in the Bow Valley with three other members of their pack. I enjoy seeing them anytime of the year, but more so in the winter when they have the full winter coat. They had some frost highlights on the coats, easier spotted on the black wolf, caused by their breathing. The morning I saw them, they were very playful and it was a joy to watch them.

Grey Wolf

Every time I see wildlife its a special moment. A friend and I were chatting when two wolves came out of the forest. One walked past us very determined, but this one waited and stared for few seconds in the heavy falling snow. Enough time for me to get few images and a wonderful memory.

When ten thousand plus years ago the ice receded, wildlife and people moved into the area, sharing the trails they created. In time wildlife was sharing some of these trials with those riding horses. Then closer to recent times, some of those same trails had horses pulling carts, followed by motorized vehicles on dirt road. Today on the bottom of the valley, once popular trail is covered by asphalt, on which all sorts of vehicles travel each and everyday. When using these roads, keep your eyes open for those still using the same route as  their ancestors did thousands of years before.

Alpha Male Wolf

The alpha wolf has the highest rank in the pack, given preference to first to eat and first or only one to mate in the pack. If others in the pack break the rules, they can pushed out or worst, killed. The alpha tends to be the strongest and maintains the position by defeating others when challenged. They can use eye contact to maintain their position, in this case getting the right of way on the road.

Wolves

It was a moment you can only experience few places in the world, one of those places is in the Canadian national parks. I was making my way home after playing at the North end of Banff National Park, when I came across not one but six wolves. They were the members of the Bow Valley Pack and were heading toward the forest  through the open meadow. There were four pups and two adults. The alpha female Faith was great to watch, full of confidence of her surrounding and at all time aware of the pups as they made their way across the road and open meadow. I could have watched her all day, she was a beautiful mom, I was in love.

As they were crossing the open meadow, there were four young bull elk nearby. All elk had their eyes on the wolves, there was not going to be a chase that day. Two pups made few steps toward the elk, but quickly and understandably got back and followed the pack into the forest. Faith, standing on the side of the road, watched the pack and occasionally looked toward me, once realizing all was well joined the pack.

Louis Pasteur is quoted as saying, "luck favours the prepared". Once again I was lucky enough to come cross wolves few weeks back, four of them going through the deep snow. It has been a great winter for photography and coming across wolves second time in a short period time, just made it that much better. I was not sure where they were headed, but I was prepared with the camera in hand and was able to grab few images of one of the wolf that was taking its time heading into the forest.

Wolf

Sun had set and it was getting dark fast, as I drove home. I came around a turn to where the road runs straight for few hundred meters, there I saw two dark images on the road, I quickly realised they were wolves. I slowed down as I got close, the one nearer got off the road and sat down while the other kept its distance on the road. The headlight from the car showed me the details of the beautiful animals, I thought not enough light was there for me to take any photos. After a minute or so I decided to move on, but quickly the wolf sitting, got up and got front of the car. I stopped and it went back off the road, but it was back front of the car when I tried to drive away again. I decided to park the car on the side of the road and see what would take place next.

The wolf kept about car length front of my car, with headlights on it, I decided to grab my camera and take few pictures. It kept the same distance while it moved around and also was comfortable enough to defecated on the road. Another vehicle came by and stopped beside mine, I talked with the two in the van as they pointed out two other wolves were behind us, saw one sitting off the road few car length away. They drove away, and the wolves started leaving one by one, I decided to drive off. As I did the fourth wolf with a collar around its neck ran across the road front of me. It was great seeing the wolves up close, just hoping they were curious the reason for hanging around the road and were not because they were fed. As one can see from the attached photo, the wolf in it and the other three were in fine health, able to defend for them self. They don't need our food, they just need us to give them space to look after themselves and stay wild.

Until next moment.
