Black and White

Most of the pictures I take, I want to keep them in all of the glorious colours they come in. Occasionally they are few I know I'll be turning them into black and white as soon as get on my computer. It's great to have options, but still the final image has to appealing. Still, I have to make sure I take the best picture possible. Then I can look at my options.

Red breasted Nuthatch

I was out looking for a Great Grey Owl, that was spotted the day before. But it was not my time, I had to wait few days. So off I went, searching to see what I could come across on the nearby trail. A light drizzle started, stored the camera and kept walking. That did not last long, I could hear several nuthatches ahead. Within seconds I was near a tree that fallen few weeks back and among its roots were the Red breasted Nuthatches. They kept moving front of me, just as I was ready to take a picture, they would move again. I was running out of time, as they were starting to fly away. Just then one perched front of me, with a clean background, I quickly grabbed my picture and it was my time to move on.

Mallards and Common Redpoll

I was out enjoying a walk under blue sky and bright sun. Was hoping to come across birds, I could hear few here and there but could not get near any. Then at the end of the trip I came across sounds of chickadees, took few pictures but nothing I wanted to keep. Then I came across several Common Redpolls, they were just too far for my lens to get the pictures I wanted, but was happy with few. Then across the blue sky 22 Mallards flew by, grabbed several pictures before they were too far. Liked the way they looked with the blue sky background.

Pyramid Mtn

It was the day I was heading back to Banff from Jasper. Decided to head to Pyramid Lake first, to take pictures of Pyramid Mtn. It was  a cool morning with slick road. Kept my fingers crossed, hoping the water would be calm. On my way I scouted Patricia Lake just minutes before arriving at Pyramid Lake. Reached Pyramid Lake, the water was calm. Quickly grabbed few images and away I went. As I came back to Patricia Lake, stopped at the spot I had scouted for a possible picture just minutes before. I liked the way the rocks by the shore complemented the  mountain. The oxidization of the iron minerals that are found in the rocks, gives the mountain and the Victoria Cross Range a beautiful reddish-orange hue. Picture in hand, it was then time to head for home.

Bighorn Sheep

I'm an eye guy, they always have more to say then what the rest of the body is saying. Rightfully so, being one of the more complex part of the body. Culturally, eyes have always played an important role. That important role is reflected in painting and of course in photography. It's important to  make sure the eyes are in focus when taking pictures of a person, same holds true of wildlife. While I was in Jasper National Park last week for work, spending few days with youth delegates  that were part of Unconference. Started by Robert (naturalist and painter) Bateman's "Get to Know" Program, working with various partners, including Parks Canada, to inspire youth to discover the natural world. We came across several Mountain Sheep while on our way to Medicine Lake. We quickly took advantage of the opportunity with our cameras.

Half Moon

Sometime it just small thing that makes or breaks an image or just makes it that much more interesting. I saw the two peaks front of me with fresh snow, looking very winterish. But was not plaining to take a picture until the clouds created a space to unveil  the half-moon. Then quickly grabbed the camera, composed and took the attached image.

Dark eyed Junco

There are some ten thousand species of birds found around the world, they are found from the Arctic to the Antarctic and everywhere in between. They vary in size from a hummingbird to the large Ostrich. They come in all the colours of the rainbow. They are the living connection to the dinosaurs, Archaeopteryx (oldest known bird) being the link. Oh yes, they are so much to fun to watch and take pictures of.

Mount Rundle

It has been a while since I last took a picture of a sunrise at the Vermilion Lakes. Been taking pictures there for some 17 years. When I'm not able to go too far from home, they are always there like a good friend. Never letting me down, always providing me with the straight truth full of colours and wonders. Just as when you think you know all there is to know about your friend, you get surprised.

Fall Colours

Have been able to sneak away from the crazy part of my life and be among the beautiful fall colours. It's a feast for the eyes and can't stop taking pictures of the leaves. Moving around them until I like the colour or colours in the background. Treating the leaves the same way as I treat the flowers when taking their pictures. Hoping to be out there again before the fall colours disappear for the year.

Moon over Mount Little

I was visiting Moraine Lake late in the day for a possible picture, but the heavy wind was not helping. The wind was not going to give me a clear reflection in the water I was hoping for. On the way toward the lake I had spotted the moon setting above the nearby mountains.  I drove few kilometers  away from the lake and pulled over. The moon was making its way back of Mount Little and a ray of sunlight was hitting Fay Glacier. I had to act fast, because from my angle the moon was making a quick move downward. Quickly snapped the zoom lens onto to the camera and started taking pictures. Just in time I got the picture I wanted.

Milky Way

Was out during the early night to take pictures of the Milky Way. With the days getting shorter and shorter, it gets darker earlier and that means I don't have to be out to long. Still need to sleep to get out early in the morning for the sunrise. Will keep expermenting to get bettr at it and loking forward to taking few when the mountains are covered with snow this winter.

Elk

It was few weeks ago, before the start of the rut season for this bull. I was in my car and the elk was moving slowing in the forward direction as it ate. I did not want to get the whole elk in the picture, but wanted to make sure its head was and most important its eye was in focus. No matter what is your subject, having the eye or eyes in focus can make or break a picture. It was moving and the grass was in the way as I tried to focus on the eye. I had my camera set to focus a spot middle of the sensor, which eventually made it easy to focus on the eye and get my picture.

Gulls

Sabine's Gull

Over a week a ago I was out taking pictures of a juvenile Sabine's Gull spotted at the Second Vermilion Lake by a friend. The last time it was spotted in Banff National Park was in 2006. When I arrived at the location, it was close enough for me to take pictures of it. It was among other water fowls. Spent anough time to grab several decent pictures and when it moved away, also grabbed a nice shot of a Ring billed Gull.

With or Without Me

Often I'll come across people getting their picture taken with landscape in the background or wildlife. Now, not for a moment I have thought about putting myself into any of my pictures. But I do spend time thinking why for example this person in the above picture wanted a picture of herself witht he elk in the background. If it was just of the elk, would it have less value. If it was just of the elk, would the person forget they were there. Well each to their own, except not good standing with your back to a bull elk who is few meters away.

Osprey Family

Not a good year for this particular Osprey family. The last few years the adults have been able to raise three successful juveniles. But this year it has been a different story. They started out with three, but quickly they were down to two. Just when it looked as if the two remaining would survive, it was down to one. I don't have any scientific theory what happened this year, just anecdotal evidence. Each time I saw the adults bring a fish to the nest, they tended to be smaller compared to last few years and much larger time gap between drops. Each season brings different challenges, each year wildlife tries to adapt and make the most of it.

Elk

The day was coming to an end, the sun was on its way down. The elk was all by itself, digged little with its antelers, closed its eyes and sat down for some rest

Full Moon and the Elk

Sunise was still on its way and the full moon was setting behind the Massive Range. I was trying to grab few quick pictures as I was watching the Elk near me. Within few minutes the moon was behind the range and it was time to see if I good get few images of the Elk. The bull was not too happy as it was bugling away. One female ran past him, and he chased her into the river. Soon other followed and the bull right behind. Wish I was on the other side of the river to catch a picture of it coming toward me, but that day it was going to be a picture from the side it went into the river from.

Dragonfly and Damselflies

Was hoping to come across birds, but as the afternoon moved on I came to realisation I had to pick another subject. Dragonflies and damselflies were all around me, I had my new subject. It was hard taking pictures of them flying, but when they would stop I would snap some pictures. Before I knew it, I was starting to get few good pictures. Once again nature provides.

Milky Way

The universe contains everything that exists including our galaxy the Milky Way. The Milky Way about 100, 000 light years in diameter and 1, 000 in thickness, with mere 200 to 400 billion stars. On the inner rim of the Milky Way's Orion Arm is our star the Sun. The third rock from the Sun is our planet the Earth. On Earth on a continent North America, in a country Canada is the national park Banff. In Banff next to the Third Vermilion Lake, I stood looking outward toward the universe.

Birds

Wilson's Warbler

Few days ago I was out looking for birds to take pictures of. Cold weather is slowly making its way and the migration is in progress. I was trying my luck with the small birds, the larger birds like gulls and various ducks were too far to get good pictures of. That was okay, the small birds were entertaining me and after waiting, was able to get few good images.
