It's all about the small details, the mountains were covered by snow and the low morning light was providing a nice contrast. The moon was in the right position, but the clouds that were moving in had it covered. I grabbed the picture but wanted to wait until the moon was in the open. Just had to wait few minutes in this case, and it made all the difference.

There are few mountains in the Bow Valley that you can't pass for a picture opportunity. Especially taking their pictures during sunrises and sunsets. Daylight was coming to an end and I decided to finish the day by taking pictures of Castle Mountain. I was well rewarded.

The American Marten saw me coming and decided to climb a tree for saftey. I quickly moved to my side to get a clear view and was able to take its picture scurrying up the tree.

There were several bulls in the open, each one doing his thing. After taking pictures of others I started focusing on the one closest to me. It was too close to get its whole body in the picture. Instead of moving back, I decided to create a picture of the male by leaving parts of it out of the frame. What to leave out and what to keep is always a personal preference, what looks good to the eyes. To help the elk stand out, it helped having some distance in the background, once it tilted its head and eye in sharp focus, I had my picture.

Most often I like to see clouds in the sky when taking landscape pictures. Here Mount Temple was all lit up and it looked as if the clouds were smoke coming off the mountain. The clouds add to the image and provide a balance to the image.

Have to start warming up my bird photography skills, as it will not be too long before the birds start making their way back to the mountains. The American Dipper is one bird that's always found in Banff. It was busy looking for food as I was busy taking its picture. We were both successful.

It was few hours into the night, clouds were out, wind was non-existence on the ground and the moon light was having an effect. I looked down on the small pool of open water, it was calm, no life form in site. I was taking my time, letting my eyes get adjusted to the night. As they adjusted, I was started seeing the pictures I wanted. I tried few long exposures until I was seeing what I wanted, 10 seconds did the trick.

Well, my moose streak countines, it seems every few weeks I have been coming across moose. I was making my way to Lake Louise when I noticied fresh tracks on the new fallen snow. Looked around and quickly located two moose nearby in the trees eating top of willow shrubs. The younger male with just one antler is out of the frame, but the older one was very happy to pose.

When there is complete absence of pigment in the skin hair and eyes, the organism is called an albino. But if the organism has diminished amount of pigment, it is referred to as albinoid, as is the red squirrel in the picture. Its natural colours are visible in its eyes and various parts of its body. For this squirrel it challenging enough surviving in the forest in its natural colours, let along sticking out like this. There are number of defects associated with albinism as well, which can shorten the life span of an animal. But this squirrel is doing not to bad, first spotted last spring by others before my turn came last week.

Winter is a good time to take pictures of landscapes, the light is low and the window for a good picture is long. The mountains covered with snow seem to pop out of the ground. And in the mountains, there is no end to opportunities.

It was a beautiful morning, with blue sky and everything covered with fresh snow.

It was a cold morning, but out there on top of the deep snow was one lone White tailed Ptarmigan. I had first noticed its track and shortly after I spotted it nipping away willow shrub buds. After having a nice meal, it decided to conserve energy and stay warm by partially burrowing under the white powder.
After a busy morning its good to sit down, bow the head and get a few zzzz.

The day was coming to an end, when I spotted a moose cow with a her calf. It was time to take few more pictures. I slowly moved myself into a position as not to scare them away and started to take pictures. It helped having all that snow, making it bright enough to take pictures holding the camera in hand. After about ten minutes I got the pictures and it was time to make my way home.

For few winters I have been trying to get this picture, but something was always missing. The light was gone, the clouds were not there or in the wrong place. Not enough snow had fallen, or waited too long and the water froze over. It all came together this winter.

The wait was much longer then the time I had to take the picture of the full moon, before it cleared the Tunnel Mtn. The moon was just visible through the thin layer of cloud, producing a bit of a halo effect. Was happy with this simple picture.

There were perhaps close to 100 elk, most females with few one year old and younger males. I wanted to get a group shot, but they were spread out in the open, and scattered amount the shrubs and trees. So I decided to do some portrait shots.

Every hike is a small journey, it all starts with the first step. Sometimes you can see where you going to end up, in this case it can be the base of Mount Chephren in the picture by hiking to Chephren Lake. Other times you have to wait until you get there, same trail head as the first to reach Cirque Lake. But so often I find, the important part is not just about reaching the end, it's the discoveries you encounter along the way.

Few weeks back I was taking pictures of Mount Temple as it was being lit by morning light. Once I got the picture of the whole mountains, I then started to take pictures of parts of the mountain. The mountain has so much character, was trying to find the best light and shadow and rock and snow combination.

After few outings to look for White-tailed Ptarmigans, I found one. It was moving on top of meter deep snow, eating buds of the willow shrubs. The hard part that morning was keeping my balance in deep snow, while kneeling down to take pictures on snowshoes.
