California Gull

I was watching several gulls by the side of the lake, deciding which one to take pictures of. Just then this young gull started to fly near me, it was bit tricky as it looked as if it was flying directly toward me. In the end I got the picture I wanted.

Elk

This male was resting in the tall grass in the early hours of the day. Every now and then it would stick its head just above the grass. It could be the insects or perhaps wondering what I was up to. What was I up to? Just wanting to get a picture when its eyes were visible.

Wood Lilies

Light rain was falling on hundreds of wood lilies before me and just enough light to get out among them to take pictures. It's a beautiful flower, even more with rain helping to saturate their colours. Just kept looking for the right combination of flower or flowers with the  right background, out of all the pictures I took that morning  this one was my favourite.

Double Rainbow

Few weeks back I was traveling in my car with rain falling. As I looked ahead, the sun was trying to push through, so I had a quick look back and could see part of a rainbow. I quickly found a place to park and got the camera ready in the car as to avoid getting the it wet. Then stepped outside and grabbed few pictures of not one but two rainbows.

Grizzly Bear

This beautiful grizzly was somewhat camouflaged with the background, but still spotted making its way across. Mating season is over and the focus is now on just doing lot of eating. We're in the middle of the summer now, but lot of time is required to put on enough fat to survive the coming winter. For the female grizzly, if she has a fertilized egg, it multiplies briefly and then stops, it floats in the uterus. Giving the female the summer to fatten up and if she gets enough fat, the egg will implant and begin to grow.

Rufous Hummingbirds

Spent number of hours in the evening and in the early morning over the last few weeks near a Rufous Hummingbird's nest. Observing and learning their behaviour and taking many pictures as I fed the mosquitoes. The mother and her offspring are probably making their way south now, leaving me with pictures and memories. One of my favourite picture was taken few weeks back, the mother feeding one of her hatchlings.

Osprey

The male adult bringing a small fish for the three young mouths and the female adult. The three young ospreys just back of the nest will be able to look after themselves in a week or so and then both parents will be fishing and feeding the ever hungry mouths.

Northern Shoveler

Sometime the picture is just there for the taking. I was about 10 meters away and had to move slowly so as not to disturb the Northern Shoveler to take this picture. As I moved into position, it kept an eye on me.  Got the low angle I was looking for and then quickly took few pictures before moving on, leaving the bird resting on one leg.

Upper Falls

Johnston Canyon is a fun and a popular place to hike, few days ago I was there about 6 am, had the whole trail to myself. After reaching the Lower Falls, a 1.1 km walk, I quickly hiked another 1.6km to the Upper Falls. Did not even try to take pictures from the base of this fall, too much water being sprayed in my face. Even from the view top of the fall, the mist was of concerned, but not enough to stop me from taking few pictures.

Numa Falls

For number of years I have been trying to get a picture of Numa Falls in Kootenay National Park, but something always was not right. But few days ago it all came together, the water level was good and the mist created by the small waterfall helped saturated the colours of the rocks. Then it was just a matter of finding the right amount of time for the exposure, in this case it was six seconds.

Grizzly Bear

For the first few years the grizzly bear cubs don't have a care in the world, their mother providing the protection and the food needed to grow big and strong. But eventually a day arrives when they have to face the world on their own. This might be  the case for this cub, all along, looking very nervous and frighten. But if the mother did a good job, it will slowly gain strength and courage by applying the lessons learned.
