About 90 percent of black bear diet is plant material, which can consist of up to 30 different plants. This one is eating grass and dandelions.

At this time of the season its worth watching where I'm stepping. As I was taking pictures of Bow Fall, I noticied this beautiful columbine near my feets. A quick change of lens and the picture was mine.

The day before I found out that a Calliope Hummingbird was visiting a gooseberry shrub from a friend. So I decided to spent some time the following day to see if it would come back to the same shrub, after waiting 20 minutes there it was. The male spent under a minute getting the nectar before flying away. I waited to see if it would return, after about 34 minutes it did and again spend under a minute at the shrub before flying away again. I waited two more times, each time being rewarded by its visit.

The paintbrushes are starting to show their colours in the mountains. Finding them in the valley and as warm weather contuines, they will be found higher up in the meadows. This one was spotted while visiting north part of Banff NP.

Yellow Warbler is a beautiful little bird, but a challenge to get a nice clear picture of it. Always moving and in direct light difficulty to get detail of its feathers. But have to keep trying and in this case it paid off.

For few weeks now these two black bear cubs have been out of the safety that was provided by the den with their mother. They are born with little fur, weighing under a pound each. Once born, the mother goes into lighter sleep, responding to the needs of her cubs when they are awake. To provide enough milk for her babies, the mother can lose about half a pound a day to convert her body stores to feed her cubs. Once out of the den the challenges increase, but the mother is never far away, always there to look after her cubs until the day arrives when they are ready to face the world on their own.

It's not the best of pictures, but it was great seeing this popular female grizzly with her three cubs in Banff NP. After a mid-day nap they decided to swim instead of walk on dry land to reach their destination. Their destination was a small forested area where they might find elk calves.

Was in Kootenay National Park taking long exposures of part of Vermilion River. I waited until it was end of the day. The hard part is what to include or what not to include in the picture and how long to make the exposure, it a nice way to be creative.

The elk calf is kept isolated until it's large enough to escape predators. The calves are born spotted. like others in the deer species. After two weeks the calves join the herd. This one is only a week old and is left in a "safe" spot by the mother, as it looks for food. The calves will curl up and stay motionless, hoping not to be spotted. This one was noticed by friends looking for birds.

As great as it was seeing the northern lights last Friday, the camera's sensor always picks up more colours and details. For this images I was actually looking south, the light show was that good. The moon was making its way up and helped bring out the blue sky and the details in the landscape as well. It was a beautiful night worth losing sleep over.

Another northern lights picture from last Friday, when nature put on a great show. Can't wait for the next one.

Less then day old, the parents were taking the goslins to a safe spot. To get there, they paraded the little ones front of us who were standing on the shore of the lake. I got front of them to take this picture lying down on the dock. Few mintues later they were out of our reach.

Some of the things I look for when trying to take a good picture of a water fowl. The light coming from behind me or from the side of the bird. Having calm water to get some reflection of the bird. And I try to get close and low to the bird as much as possible. When everything comes together, the results are in the picture.
