Black Bear

A black bear walks along the road during mid morning, eating vegetation as it went its way. The weather is getting warmer and more food can be found through out the mountains. It will not be long before calving season starts, opportunity for this bear and others for meat. Still about 85 percent of diet consist of various type of vegetation.

Grizzly

A young grizzly survived its first winter without its mother. But the challenge continues, to survive its first year using what it has learned, to find food and to stay away from danger. If it does this right, it will gain confidence as it grows and get stronger. And with bit of luck, it may also have a long life like its mother.

Blad Eagles

To see more of nature one has to blend in and not stand out. I spent few hours behind a tree from a snow storm, watching these two Bald Eagles perched on a nearby balsam popular tree. I took pictures of them and learned about them as they reacted to their surrounding.  In the case of this picture, the eagle on the top flew after geese  that landed on the river nearby. On its return both started calling out as the storm continued.

Mount Rundle

Its always great to start the morning watching a sunrise and when possible taking pictures of it. I will never stop enjoying watching a mountain for that matter the whole scene front of me starts to change as the sun rises. The rays of light reach the sky, the clouds and then the mountains. With each step the view becomes more and more beautiful. A good way to start any day.

Common Mergansers

Few days back we were out birding in the snow. Even with snow falling, there was enough light coming through to take pictures. We came across these two Common Mergansers, resting on a log. I slowly moved closer and kept taking pictures with the snow falling. It seems warm weather  is taking its time coming through for these birds.

Mount Rundle

This picture was taken ten days ago, it was a beautiful morning, most of the Two Jack Lake was still covered by ice. Mount Rundle was lit up by the morning light and the moon still in the sky, it was hard to pass the picture.

Gray Wolf

Middle of the day I decided to get out and explore. Just as I was coming out of the forest to the edge of the river, I spotted a wolf on the other side. It looked at me for few seconds but then it moved away. Then I heard the calling of Bald Eagles, I got close enough to take their pictures. As I moved into the spot the snow started to fall, took cover under a tree for few hours, taking pictures of the eagles when the snow was light. When it cleared I was rewarded further, the wolf was back, I stayed put, taking its pictures before it left me again.

Moon

Never time to rest, I was about to go inside after a busy day. Looked toward the sky and saw the moo to the right of Mount Rundle. Quickly took few pictures before going inside.

Grizzly

Four months had passed since we last saw each other. He was hanging out between two rails instead of on a trail. Railway lines are dangerous place to be. This time for the grizzly it was less about taking the less energy consumed route and more about vacuuming up the spilled grain by the passing trains. Move the grain out of the equation and he would have been working harder to find the food that his body could better utilize. He's off the grain diet for now and hopefully is on the side of a mountain, eating a winter kill.
