Grizzly

A three and a half year old grizzly has been spending way to much time near the town area. For its safety it was tagged 144 and collared to better keeps tracks of its where about. Its first year without its mother will be tough, but its a step all bears have to go through.

Lamb

This lamb just about a week old was bit shy about being in public. While the adults were out in the open, the lamb took its time joining them. They had made their way down to the bottom of the valley, probably for the first time for this lamb. Its growing pretty fast and gainning confidence each day, before long it will be running with the big boys and girls.

Mountain Goats

While watching the mountain goats from the bottom of the valley, I was taken back to days in the classroom when studying Greek mythology. The goats like the mythological gods watching over from above, while a mortal looking above in amazement.

Mistaya Canyon

There are few places in Banff National Park I like to visit over and over again. One of those is Mistaya Canyon, particularly when the snow is melting and lot of water is making its way through the canyon. That was the case when I was out there with a friend as the sun was rising.

Grizzly

A beautiful female grizzly waitng on top of a slope for her two cubs to catch up. She will never go too far, always near them to watch over them and ready to come to help if needed.

Crowfoot Glacier

While ascending the slopes across the valley from Crowfoot Mountain, I happened to looked back toward the Crowfoot Glacier. It looked like a large painting sitting on the side of the mountain, my eyes were attracted to the  colours of the rocks, the contrast between snow and ice and the rocks. Only thing I had to do was to decide what to include and what not to in the picture I took.

White Suckers

These white suckers were spawning in a small pool of water, there must have been over 200 suckers. I put on a polariser filter on my lens to take away the reflection, then went about finding interesting picture to take. This was my first attempt taking pictures of fish, I would wait until there was a  interesting composition, then snap away.

Mallard Ducks

The female Mallard waits for her mate to cross the tracks, who pauses long enough for me to grab few pictures. Not sure what brought them to the track, grain or simply they were going from one pool of the water to another.

Savannah Sparrow

The leaves were pushing their way out, as spring is making its way into summer. This morning the sparrow was easily spotted, but soon little more effort will be required to spot the birds on the trees and on the ground where the grass is growing. The valley will be covered by summer colours soon.

Western Tanager

Every year there are few rare sighting of birds not often seen in the area. Few days ago this beautiful Western Tanager was spotted catching insects in the air and on ground. After each catch it would perch nearby, providing an opportunity for pictures. A show that went on for half an hour.

Savannah Sparrow

With the large varity of species and the various place they can be found, there is no end to the amount of pictures I can take of birds. Here the Savannah Sparrow singing away while perched on top of a small spruce tree, with the morning light popping it from the background.

Barred Owl

Every year I'll come across few species of owls, often one of those tend to be the Barred Owl. Normally I'll locate them after I hear their call. In this case, I was heading home when I head a single note by the owl. The sound was coming from the direction I was headed, got my camera ready and started scanning the area front of me as I walked. Couple of minutes later I located the owl, took the pictures and then it was time to cook for me.
