Fall Colours

I have been busy taking picture of the fall colours, here are the colours produced by a trembling aspen leaves. I can never get enough of the colours, where ever I go I'm looking out for them. In this case I was hiking to a lake and when I spotted this small aspen tree with beautiful colours on the leaves. Took my camera to take few pictures and then I was on my way.

Elk

While other photographers were waiting for the magical light to take pictures of Mount Rundle. I quickly grabbed mine thinking the clouds moving in were going to take the sunlight. Then looking back of First Vermilion Lake, I noticed several elk about to cross the water. With about 400 meters between us I needed to change my lens. The light hitting the trees in the background and reflecting in the water and elk spread out helped make this picture.  And soon after the light was gone and the clouds moved in.

Saddleback

It was mid morning when I looked down on Saddleback, the larch trees showing their fall colours surrounded by the majestic peaks. With the cold wind, I quickly had to make my down among the golden needles, to get warm and have something to eat. Afterwards I enjoyed the colours before heading home.

Moraine Lake

Weather more then anything else plays a big role how a picture will turn out, and its more then just about the light. We all woke up to fallen snow, not only on the peaks but it also made its way to the ground.. As well the valley was filled with low clouds, photography was going to be a challenge but at the same time an opportunity to get interesting pictures. I had couple of places in mind, one of those was Moraine Lake, photos of which have been taken by photographers from around the world. The area has raw beauty second to none,  with fresh snow, low clouds and open water, it was hard not to get a good picture. Soon on my arrival, I knew the picture I wanted, afterwards  I watched others capturing their moments.

I find the best way to explore the mountains is on foot, but there are also great views from the roads. For me they are invitation to get out of the car and to explore. This picture was taken after going past Bow Summit, I saw the view heading downhill. I had to stop and take this picture, soon after I was on foot exploring.

Mount Astley

We woke to another snowfall in Banff, I had to get out there to enjoy the beautiful views. It got even better when some of the clouds parted and the sunlight started to highlight the landscape. Here is a picture from Lake Minnewanka from this morning.

Elk

This is my favourite time to watch the elk, during the rut season. There is so much drama, all the elk are affected during this time. The dominant males are centre of attention, all the females get attention from just about all the males. The young males who just want to just stay close to the harem for their safety, are pushed away to defend for them selves until the rut season is over. The young's of this year are trying to keep track of their mothers while a large male is bugling away smelling of dirt, sweat and urine hitting on mom.

This bull elk was resting, which is important for the larger males who  get little time to rest and eat during the rut season. After getting up he walked around approaching the females near him. Then he rolled on the ground and dragged his antlers in the tall grass, he then pushed away two young males and was back after the females.

Barn Swallow

Four hungry mouths of juvinile Barn Swallows open up as the adults with food come to feed them. In most cases there will be enough flies for one mouth, but the wait is not long before one of the parent is back with more food. Few days after this picture was taken, these young would be feeding them self.

Grizzly

Few weeks back I got this picture of the young grizzly bear, travelling through the valley. The bears are working hard to gain weight as the long winter sleep gets closer and closer.

Bow River Sunset

It was a nice end to the day, standing near the Bow River and waiting  to see what the sunset was going to look like. The sun had left the valley, the clouds above were getting brighter and brighter. Showing golden yellow and touch of red, same colours being reflected in the water front of me. While enjoying this beautiful view, I started to hear the howling of wolves. The calls lasted for about eight to ten minutes, not a bad way to end the day.

Elk

Returning home this evening I came across this male trying to hitch  a ride to where the action is. All summer he has been getting ready for the rut season. He is heading in the right direction and by morning he should be hearing the bugling of the other dominant males.

The run season is on for the elk, the bugling can be heard throughout the valley. Its good time to give the males lot of space, here this male taking its aggression out on the grass and the ground before it went out of the reach of my camera to roll in the nearby wetland.

Osprey and the Sun

I could have stayed home when the valley was full of smoke but I decided to take it as a challenge for my photography addiction.  It was day two for the heavy smoke covering the  Bow Valley from the historic wildfires in Washington State. I was looking at the Osprey nest and thinking  how to incorporate the sun in the picture. I looked at the Sun's angle to the Osprey's nest and to where I needed to stand. Moving into position I soon realised the trees were in my way. But the Sun was moving through the sky and soon I had my opening, just needed the Osprey to stay front of the nest. I got the pictures I envisioned, but instead of leaving afterward, I decided to wait. It paid of, getting even a better picture when the female took to the air.
