Osprey

The fish got passed around few times before it was eaten. When one of the adult Osprey brought the fish to the nest, no one was there. Two of the juveniles were nowhere to be seen while the third was perched on a tree about 100 meters away with the second adult. The second adult went to the nest and took the fish and then called out. No one showed up, so it took the fish to the juvenile it was perched with. But the juvenile was not hungry and just flew away. Then the fish was brought back to the nest again where the second adult ate it. I was just standing in the middle of all this, hoping for a bite or two to fall in my mouth.

Bow River

I was slowly making my way to the spot where I was going to take pictures of sunset in middle of Bow Valley along Bow River. Took few pictures of a Great Blue Heron and then spent time watching a beaver keeping an eye on me. Then it was time to watch a beautiful sunset.

Above the Clouds

I was busy checking for signs of wildlife along the river, when I looked south east. Storm clouds were moving in, with a touch of wildfire smoke mixed in and right above it all was the moon. Zoomed in with my lens and took the picture before the clouds covered it.

Bident Mountain and the Moon

Patience is a very important part of becoming a better photographer. I saw the moon making its way over Bident Mountian, but I felt if I waited I could get a better picture. The sun would be lower, giving warmer light, keeping my fingers crossed that the clouds would not block the light. As well, I wanted the moon to appear closer and more over the mountain. So for an hour I went to play elsewhere and on my return the picture I took was waiting for me.

Mountain Chickadee

The plan was to go take pictures of the larches and their golden colour needles at this time of the year. But I get easily distracted by nature. Before I knew it, I was taking pictures of the mammals and the birds I was seeing among the larches. One of the picture from that hike was of the Mountain Chickadee taking flight.

Pilot Mountain

It was few weeks back, when all was green. Most  of the times I drive by Pilot Mtn on my way to some adventure else where, just giving it a look and not thinking about taking its picture. But that morning, it was worth stopping to take picture of the mountain.

Milbert's Tortoiseshell

It was just few days ago when I was surrounded by beautiful colour of asters. The various insect were busy among the flowers, but I was looking at the few Milbert's Tortoiseshell butterflies. Waiting for them to get close enough to get a picture. To help me get a good picture, I made sure the light was coming from behind me to get brighter colours. It only took minutes to get the picture I was waiting for.

Coyote

Sometimes all it takes is being out there. I pulled on to a side road and right along the road a coyote was standing. It saw my car and started to walk ahead me. I slowed down and waited for it to run away, it decided to take its time. It stopped near some tall grass listening, it quickly jumped in the air to pounce on its unexpected food. I got the attached picture, the coyote missed this time but few minutes later it got a snack.

Tipi and Cascade Mtn

A tipi was originally made out of birchbark, followed by animal skins and today of canvas, it's a remarkable durable dwelling. Giving warmth during harsh winters, providing comfort from hot summers and keeping dry those inside during heavy rain. Its portability came in handy, packed quickly when needed to move with the bison herds for example. A ceremony was going to take place with the Stoney Nakoda  Nations and Parks Canada, was happy to find the tipi on the valley below Cascade Mtn. With the drama in the sky, how could I not take this picture on a beautiful cool morning.

Wilson's Warbler

The light was coming from behind the tree and the Wilson's Warbler. I needed to over expose the image just enough to get the details in the warbler but not to lose the details in the highlights. It helped that the bird was bright yellow colour and the light was bouncing from leaf to leaf.

Cattails

The other morning I came across cattails, and just liked the way the sunlight was having a effect on them as they swayed with the wind. With the sunlight coming in from the opposite direction, I moved from side to side until I got the composition I liked. Got few keepers.

Great Blue Heron

It was a morning that was all about Great Blue Herons, was seeing them everwhere. In the sky, middle of shallow watrers and in the weeds. I was able to get close enough for good pictures and in many cases they were coming near where I was standing. I took full advantage of the opportunities.

Moose

I saw two moose while I was driving. I pulled over and found a safe place to park my car and locked the doors after getting my gear. Walked a short distance where I could get my picture without disturbing the animals. Got the right lens on my camera and corrected the setting to bring out some of the details from their dark chocolate hide. Then compose and take the picture, or you can just pull out your smartphone and take the picture.

Lesser Scaup Chick

I had finished taking pictures of Great Blue Herons, decided to walk alongside the shallow lakes to see what else I could come across. I came around some willow shrubs, when right front of me was a female Lesser Scaup with 8 chicks. That was only couple of weeks ago, hopping they are doing well and will be ready to fly south when cold weather returns. They were on the move, I quickly grabbed few pictures before they were out of sight.

Bringing Home the Fish

Normally the three fledgling would be waitng in the nest when the adult brings the fish, but this afternoon they were out flying. The other parent who was perched on a nearby tree landed on the nest before the arrival of the fish. The waiting adult ended up eating the fish, the fledgling once arrived had to wait little longer for their lunch.

Lake Louise

There I was standing on the shores of the Lake Louise, looking at the beautiful colour of the water, the magnificent peaks around it, some covered with glaciers. Throw in the mountain blue sky and just enough clouds to add drama to it. It was hard not to get a good picture of the lake. I think Lake Louise is one of those places in the world where if you can't get a good picture, its time to hand in your camera and go buy a post
card.

Moraine Lake

It was late in the day standing next to Moraine Lake, waiting for the sun to set. The clouds did not light up as I hoped, but the calm water provided a different opportunity. A opportunity to get a differnt angle of the lake and of some of the ten peaks.

Fireweed

Slowly the summer colours are disappearing as cool temperatures move in. Days are getting shorter and the mornings are getting colder. There still are few fireweed flowers to be found, the one in the picture was captured few weeks back.

Grizzly Cub

The bears have to keep eating, keep putting on weight to survive the coming winter. There are still lot of buffaloberries to be found. This cub is eating as many it can get in its mouth, while nearby its sibling and mother are doing the same.

White-tailed Ptarmigan

The mother took some time from foraging, to make sure all four chicks were in sight. Three were moving with their mother, but one got left behind and was calling out. Perhaps it was enjoying the view from the side of the mountain or it was having a quick chat with the columbia ground squirrel that was in the area.
