Northern Flicker

This Northern Flicker, a member of the woodpecker family has already migrated to somewhere warm for the winter. But when they were all here, I kept seeing two adults going back and forth from their nest, so I found a spot and waited and waited. I was getting the pictures of them but still wanted something better. The sun was slowly making its way down, just before flying away from the nest, this adult decided to perch on this broken branch. With this background and the light, I could not have asked for a better set up for the photo.

Mount Fryatt

Was visiting Jasper and what better way to start the day then to watch and take pictures of the sunrise. It always helps knowing the area and knowing which direction the sun is rising from and how the morning light will be touching the mountains. Then it was a matter of finding the right spot along the Athabasca River to ground the picture. As the days get shorter, the window for good light gets larger, made full use of it that morning.

Moose

Did not come across as many moose this year as last, for most part due to not getting the time to get out as much as last year. That just made it more special when I did see a moose this year, like this one few weeks back.

Fall Colours

I have been busy or should I say I have been enjoying the fall colours. But the days are numbered, everyday there is less to see as we get closer and closer to winter. Here's a picture I got while visiting Jasper.

Elk

You would have thought he was the head of the heard, but he was not. This bull elk was on the losing end during this year's rut, slowly moving with its wounds. With swollen eyes that were barely open, he found a spot to rest. As he rested, flock of  bighorn sheep came into the scene from behind. They paused upon seeing him, and he, gets up and faces them. They starer at each other, few sheep nibbled at the vegetation before them as they decided what to do. Then one made the move to pass the bull and the rest quickly followed. Afterward the bull went back down on to the ground and rested.

Northern Lights over Mtn Rundle

I thought I was heading for my bed, but an email came through, indicating there was a possibility of Northern Lights. Ten minutes later I was on my way out and another ten minutes more, I was taking pictures of Northern Lights. Even though the camera's sensor sees lot more then my naked eyes, the more my eyes got used to the night, the better the lights got.

Mount Fryatt

Was out in Jasper National Park for the day, in the morning was taking picture as the sun rose while surrounded by the fall colours. Fall is a great season to take landscape pictures. The light gets better and the colours are beautiful on the valley floor.

Sharp-shinned Hawk

Often I have seen Sharp-shinned Hawks do a quick fly by. Not even having the time to point the camera, let along take a picture of them. In case of this one, I was walking through a mixture of open grass and forested area. Saw a bird go down into the tall grass, it was a Sharp-shinned Hawk. As I was deciding how to get near for a picture, it flew up and perched itself on top of a small dead tree. It gave me the seconds I needed to take few pictures, I took full advantage of it.

Hilda Peak

In the mountains, the hard part is not taking another step, dealing with the weather, worrying about an encounter with wildlife or getting the camera out for a another picture. The hard part is heading home.

Panther Falls

I was exploring the north part of Banff National Park during a cool overcast morning few days ago. One of my stop that morning was Panther Falls, a beautiful fall from top to bottom, this part is just above the fall.

American Robin

Over the summer I got to watch this American Robin nest located in a canyon. Thanks to a friend, I watched the nest few times and got pictures looking down at the nest. The nest was located far enough that I was not bothering the birds, just stood back watching, learnign and taking pictures.

Cloudy Morning

There was a mist on the lake, fog in the valley and the sky covered with low clouds. I waited along the shore of the lake, waiting for light to come through. Nearby a Lesser Scaup and its eight chicks kept busy and just beyond them a female Common Merganser with nine juveniles. As I watched them I could hear an Osprey calling out, then got distracted by a Common Loon flying by. A beautiful way to wait for the light to come through for my picture.
