Cascade Mtn

Only few minutes from home, on my way to work when I looked over to Cascade Mtn. Beautiful light was passing through the clouds and hitting the mountain, as well the mountain was casting a reflection on the calm water of the Bow River. I just had to stop to look and to take pictures of the mountain.

Moose and Two Calves

Few weeks back I was busy taking pictures of a sunrise or should I say the first light hitting the peaks front of me. When I looked to my left, about 100 meters away I saw a female moose and what looked like a calf near her. After I took the landscape pictures, I moved closed to the moose. There was the female, but two not one calves, a first for me. I kept my distance and was able to get few good pictures through the fog.

Moraine Lake

Few weeks back I was at Moraine Lake, spending a cool morning taking pictures of the sunrise. I was hoping for clouds to add drama to the sky, that did not happen, but the water was calm. With the calm water, all I had to do was frame the pictures as the morning light started hitting the peaks. The lake makes it so easy to get a good picture.

Cedar Waxwing

I was walking home through the neighbourhood, when I heard the calls of Cedar Waxwings. I tracked them down, they were busy eating fruit off a tree. I quickly went home and returned with my camera. As people around me went about their business, I took pictures as opportunity presented itself. One person stopped and asked why I was taking pictures of the birds, I answered because they are beautiful.

Aspen Trees

Lots of fall colour in the mountains. Trying to take pictures of it before it all disappears and colder weather moves in. Few days ago was busy under the aspen trees getting pictures of the leaves lit up by the sun. A great way to spend the afternoon.

Top of Big Beehive

I had made my way up to Lake Agnes from Lake Louise, to take pictures of the sunrise. But I was stuck in the middle of a low clouds, so I kept moving up, reaching the Big Beehive. There I was suprised, the peaks all lit up, with the clouds just below me.

Gray Wolf

Grizzly bears benefit from having wolves in the same ecosystem. Sometimes grizzlies can take over what the wolves have killed or at least get some leftovers.  But grizzlies can also have more berries in their diet if wolves are around. The wolves keep prey's population in check, which in turn provide more vegetation and habitat for other wildlife. With natural control of prey population, more berry producing shrubs grow, which the grizzlies can consume. So lot is riding on this pup reaching adulthood.

Aspen Leaves

Since last week I have been trying to take pictures of fall colours whenever I'm outside. There are three ways for me to do that. One, take pictures of subject surrounded by fall colours. Two, take a landscape picture with fall colours included and third, isolate few leaves showing their fall colours.

Gray Wolf

I got to watch this wolf trying to hunt. It was going after a small heard of bighorn sheep, trying to isolate the weak one. It gave a good chase, but the luck was on the sheep side that day. Maybe the wolf tried again toward end of the day, when low light would give it a better chance.

Grizzly Bear

It was mid morning, the grizzly was eating peacefully, there was certain calm about it . For me it was all in the eyes, which I watched from a distance.  Even the one eye tells the whole story.

Ring-billed Gull

Gulls are good birds to practice taking picture of birds in flight. You can get close enough for you to isolate them from the background. In this case, this gull looked as if was going to fly into me, it turned way before that happened.

Black Bear Family

A mother black bear spotted with her two cubs eating kinnikkinnick berries, after they had snacked on rose hips. It was a bad year for buffaloberries, a food they rely on to put on the pounds for the winter. But being opportunistic eaters, they will keep looking for other source of food before its time to sleep for the winter.

Cavell Pond

We were hoping to walk up to the Cavell Pond located below the Ghost and Angel Glaciers. But the path was closed due to the possible danger of glacier calving and landing in the pond below. In summer of 2012, 60 percent of Ghost Glacier collapsed and ended up in the pond, causing a flood. So we took pictures from a safe place overlooking the area.

Gray Wolves

Wolves are very social animals, living in a pack. Most often they are related to each other by blood, led by an alpha male and female. After the alpha mates, you have the lower groups, consisting of non-breeding adults, immature wolves and perhaps outcasts, each with their own ranking. In this picture two pups are being looked after and being led by their two year old sister. Until the pups are old enough to travel with the pack, it always help the pack to have other adults helping with the raising of the young wolves.

Swainson's Thrush

After work today I head to a place where several different species of birds were eating fruit off the trees and shrubs. Most of the keepers where birds eating or perched, but this is the one that got my attention. Getting the picture as the thrush is about to grab a berry.

Grizzly

This large grizzly bear was eating on the side of the road and was surrounded by vechicles. As I watched from a distance, Parks Canada's Wildlife Guardians were kept busy controlling everyone, keeping the bear safe and the those watching it. From where I was parked I could see everyting except fo the grizzly. My hope was if I waited long enough it might move in my direction, after half an hour I caught this picture.

Double Rainbow

For few kilometers I was seeing part of this double rainbow as I was driving, thinking where I could stop to take its picture. I decided it was going to be at Hillsdale meadow, where others were busy taking pictures of fireweed flowers that were blooming in large amount, thanks to the prescribed burn this spring. But I was looking at the big picture, flowers on the ground, the Sawback Range in the background and double rainbow in the sky.

Upper Waterfowl Lake

A beautiful morning at the shore of Upper Waterfowl Lake. I was hoping for more clouds in the sky, but the request was not answered. So I decided to create a panorama from five separate images taken. Afterward I head toward the moose that were in the area.
