Mount Rundle

My favourite season winter is here, open water is disappearing and blanket of snow is covering the ground. My fingers and toes get cold like everyone else's. I just put on my warm layers and make the most of it. I can't control when the winter comes and goes, just how much fun I can have while its here.

Elk

Last week this bull just had to deal with small amount of snow to get access to the grass, but with more snow on its way, life is about to get tougher. For the elk and other members of the deer family the challenge is on to get through another winter.

Spruce Grouse

All type of photography has its challenges and there are many with wildlife. The number one is having no control what the wild creatures are going to do when I point my camera at them or when I'm about to take their picture. Let's take this Spruce Grouses for an example, I have been coming across them for years. But trying to get them in the right light, standing out in the clear has been full of entertaining but futile attempts. But all that changed this year, not once but twice. The last time was when I was wondering through coniferous forest, I came across three females and this male who got on top of a very old fallen tree. With the right amount of light and a pleasing background, I quickly put myself in the right position and grabbed several images before it moved away.

Mount Rundle

With shorter days it time to get out to take night pictures after day light has passed. Few days back on a cool night  I made my way to the Vermilion Lakes to see what the sky loked like. Just enough clouds in the sky to add to the picture and the light from the Banff lit up Mount Rundle and some of the clouds.

Castle Mountain

With the light coming from a more southernly direction, the evening light really lights up Castle Mountain. I'll be spending more time taking pictures late in the day and hopefully more in the morning as well of castle.

Mount Chephren

There is no better way to enjoy the mountains then to wander through valleys. There are so many surprises waiting around each turn, from different views of the surroundings to the possible chance of coming across creatures, from an insect to a large mammal. I'm not picky, I always find something to enjoy and to take pictures of. Few weeks back on a cold morning I walked along the river until I was tired and came back with few pictures to remind me of that adventure.

Bow Lake

The Bow Lake should be frozen over with the cold temperatures this week. But couple of weeks ago the water was still open. With the cold weather I had the whole area to myself as I explored the shores and took pictures.

Gray Wolf

Alpha male made his way onto the side of the road, it stopped and lifted its head parallel to the surface its was standing on. The beautiful sound started to come out of its mouth, right away its howl was joined by that belonging to yearling and that of a pup, who were standing just inside the forest. For few minutes, rest of the world disappeared.

Mount Rundle

The clouds were moving pretty fast through the sky, I was not sure if they wuld be in right spot when the sun would light them up. Crossed my fingers, located a spot and waited. I did not have to wait long before finding out it was going to work out, got an another beautiful picture from Vermilion Lakes.

Moose and Calf

Was taking sunrise pictures on a cold morning, with frost all around me and low mist over the lake. I was walking around the lake to find a better location to take pictures from, when a moose's head popped out of the bushes front of me and looked straight at me. I quickly started to back track and went to the other side of the small lake and sat down. Slowly the adult female came out in the open, ate and then sat down, soon joined by its calf, who came over and rubbed noses with its mom before sitting down.

Mount Whymper

Cold weather is taking its time arriving this year, but I have already spent many cold mornings out there. I like to get climatized before the winter hits the mountains, because this passion/addiction called photography does not slow down with the change of seasons. It was minus eight during the morning I took this picture, but the day quickly warmed up.

Mountain Goat

I was watching this lone mountain goat from the distance as it was eating and moving around side of the mountain. It effortlessly moved around the cliffs as it was forging for food. Until I get to see them up close up there, I enjoy watching them from the distance.

Barred Owl

This Barred Owl and its mate provided plenty of good viewing this last spring and summer. Due to behaviour of owls they are not often spotted, when they are, its always a joy. This particular owl was an exception, often spotted middle of the day while perched and being active. Hope to see it next year, until then I have many pictures to remember them by.

Epaulette Mtn

Was walking along Mistaya River, looking and taking pictures of mountains. Trying to find good locations to take pictures of mountians I had not taken before. I have seen Epaulette Mtn many times before from the road, located to the left in this picture. After a small walk I found a place to take its picture.

Osprey

I was sitting by the shore of a lake, watching this Osprey drag its talons through the water as it flew around. I was assuming it was cleaning them.  After few minutes it decided to move on, it flew right over me. Giving me few seconds to get this picture.

Two Moose

I had taken my sunrise pictures, it was time to look around. Half an hour later from a distance,  I saw two moose eating on the side of a lake. Water separated us, which also controlled how close I was going to get to them. With lit up mountains behind them, I started working on a picture which would showcase part of their habitat. It was a challenge with the bright background and they close to the colour of my favourite food standing in the shadows. But in the end, I came away happy.

Peyto Lake

Friends and I headed to 93 North, hoping to see something along the way and perhaps watch the sunset. There was no sighting of wildlife, but we got to enjoy a beautiful sunset at Peyto Lake.

Elk

This bull elk was bugling in the neighbourhood, surround by a very small harem. After spending a short time on the town side of the Bow River, it and the rest of the group were forced to the other side. Where the larger male was waiting, who pushed this male away. Rut season is full on for the elk.

Mount Rundle

It had been a while since I last taken a sunrise picture at the Vermilion Lakes. But when I was back there few weeks back on a cool morning, it took mere seconds to become comfortable with the surroundings. It's a place I'm very much familiar with and it did not take long for me to find the spot I wanted to take pictures from that morning. While others were driving around, I was waiting for the clouds to light up. It did not take long before I was witnessing another beautiful sunrise at the lakes.
